According to research, one woman can ingest up to four pounds of lipstick in a lifetime. Synthetic dyes derived from "Aluminum Lakes" colors and coal tar colors (FD&C) can be absorbed into our bodies and stored. Certain colors such as D&C Red 33, FD&C Yellow 5 and Yellow 6 have been shown to cause cancer when applied to the skin. Petro-chemically based mineral oils asphyxiate the skin, blocking the pores.
Ingredients to Avoid:
BHA and BHT are preservatives that can cause allergic reactions
Bronopol, a preservative that may break down into formaldehyde
DEA, a harmful chemical and cancer causing
Petrolatum, produced from by-products of petroleum. Can cause dermatitis.
Propylene Glycol (PEG), linked to sensitivity reactions and is not safe
Sodium laureth sulfate, very harsh detergents that can damage skin
Marj Melchiors has been processing cosmetics orders since 1997 when she began a mail order business from her home, "Cosmetics Without Synthetics, Inc."
What began as a niche for customers with sensitive skin exploded into an online store with more than 700 products.
"My business kept growing," Melchiors said.
The Internet allowed for more exposure for her company and she currently ships her products all over the world. She works with dozens of natural, organic manufacturers and mixes her own samples for clients. Melchiors also created her own line of natural products called "Earth's Beauty."
In October, Melchiors opened her All Natural Cosmetics retail showroom in Prescott Valley that already serves 100 local customers.
"We enjoy working with people in person," she said.
Why should women look to cosmetics without synthetics? Melchiors often fields this question and one answer is that, "Our skin is our largest organ."
Think about how many products get applied to the skin and understand that everything does find its way inside the body, she said.
According to Melchiors' research that she includes in her catalog, the preservatives used in today's makeup are so effective that, "autopsies done on cancerous tumors have shown residues of methyl, ethyl and propyl parabens. The only way these could have been introduced is through the external use of skincare and cosmetics."
"The two essential items women should switch to organically are lipstick and deodorant," Melchiors said.
The ingredients in both of these popular, everyday products contain many harmful chemicals including aluminum, which has been linked to Alzheimer's.
Read the ingredients lists on the back of your products, she says, and if the warning label on your hair coloring solution says "may cause blindness," you don't want to use that product. Even some of the "natural" dyes on the market list this danger.
Melchiors understands the complexities of skin tones as well as the sensitive conditions of rosacea and eczema.
"We give individualized attention; it's very personalized," she said.
Often, those with rosacea and eczema may be suffering from an allergic reaction to chemicals in their skin care products, face and body creams and cosmetics.
Melchiors also carries skin lighteners, shaving products, hair care and natural dyes, recycled wheat bags, tooth salts (brightening alternative to paste), perfumes with essential oils, soaps, sunscreens, toners, shampoos, first aid, hair styling products, deodorants, eczema treatments, anti-aging face treatments, makeup brushes, lip gloss and so much more.
She may add a natural hair coloring service in the future; next month Melchiors will open the NaturElle Spa and Boutique inside her store featuring facials and make up artistry.
