Ask the Contractor:
Community builds foundations of Prescott

Thanksgiving is a day to pause and reflect upon the blessings in your life. It is a day to consider just how fortunate you are.

Let's face facts: It has been a tough year for many - our friends, our family and people we don't know. The building industry has taken a downturn, hurting many real estate agents, brokers, contractors, suppliers and more - a significant portion of this very community's population. The economy's recovery has been painfully slow, and the national and local elections have affected the very being of our souls.

It is during these times that we need to take a breath, examine our lives and determine what is really important. We all get caught up in the negative and the stress in our lives and overlook the things that make each of us fortunate in our own ways. Let's start to focus on the positive and give thanks to those things and people that we are the most grateful for.

I am thankful for many of the special interest groups and citizens with opposing views. Without them, we would not have the opportunity to bring forth ideas and challenge one another through robust debate and share heartfelt concerns. Taking everyone's viewpoints into consideration helps us guide growth and preserve Prescott and our surrounding communities for generations to come.

I am thankful for our all of our local governmental leaders, our chambers of commerce, and so many other groups that contribute to the growth and health of Prescott and our neighbors - far too many to mention.

I am thankful for our builders and developers and all of the YCCA members who have a visionary insight that unites business and environmental interests into one goal.

Many of these people and companies offer whatever gifts are within their power - hospitality, service, sacrifice, material, donations and time.

I am thankful for the Yavapai County Contractors Association, a top-notch organization that is here to assist the citizens in our community when they need to hire a contractor, and offer information on how our citizens can protect themselves from unscrupulous contractors. I am thankful that YCCA and its members step up when a campaign for the betterment of the area is needed. I am thankful that YCCA is comprised of people and companies that have a great sense of generosity and community pride.

I give thanks every day for the opportunity to work in such stunning surroundings as Prescott.

We all have a lot to be thankful for.

Sandy Griffis is executive director of the Yavapai County Contractors Association (YCCA), a professional association representing licensed, bonded and insured contractors, suppliers, distributors and business entities. Call YCCA for information on hiring a contractor at 778-0040. Submit questions to ycca@cableone.net or through www.ycca.org.
