Founded by American Express in 2010, Small Business Saturday is celebrated every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

It is a day dedicated to supporting small businesses across the country, and to some extent, counteract the impact of big retailers and Black Friday sales.

In 2011, Congress approved Senate Resolution 320, which states, in part, "Whereas, for every $100 spent with locally owned, independent stores, $68 returns to the community through local taxes, payroll, and other expenditures."

The Prescott Chamber of Commerce participates in Shop Small. Prescott Valley's Chamber has not implemented the practice. Some small Prescott Valley businesses randomly surveyed on Nov. 21 apparently haven't heard of the program.

Only ACE Hardware seemed to be in the know, as it put out a flyer signifying in the top right corner, "Shop Small to support your local community. Saturday, Nov. 30."

American Express offers some free online advertising, but that is not necessary to promote one's business.

There is no cost to any business wanting to be a part of the Shop Small Movement and Small Business Saturday.
